Feedback via speed of light

Encoder signals via optical transmission are now available in Leine & Linde’s 800 series. The feature is introduced on the series’ new performance model for heavy duty applications, known as the XHI 801.

Technical benefits
An incremental encoder with integrated Optolink transmitter has many advantages in harsh industrial environments.

The Optolink technology permits signal transmission over long distances, up to 1500 meters. This is an important feature in many applications, for example in a wind turbine, where the signal needs to be transferred from the top of the tower, down to the ground.

As the transmission is made through an optical fiber, the signal is not affected by electromagnetic disturbances. Transmission can therefore be made also in electrically noisy environments, something that may cause interference to the signal if a standard cupper cable is used.

Thanks to the galvanic insulation offered by the fiber, the encoder is less exposed to lightning strokes, which may strike the wind turbine or crane. The transmission fiber is also weight-reducing for the complete system.

System solutions
In the receiver end Leine & Linde offers an accessory gateway that receives the Optolink signal and converts it into standard electrical encoder interfaces, like HTL or RS-422.

It is also possible to have an additional electrical output directly at the encoder, together with the Optolink output. This allows two outputs to be used, one electrical for connection with a control system, and one optical for long distance transmission.

Demanding applications
Together with the other high quality features of the XHI 801; like ceramic bearings, temperature resistance down to -40°C, and high encapsulation class; the Optolink output offers an extremely robust encoder solution for the most demanding applications.
